S260 Geology Revision Day was held on Sunday 2nd October 2005 at Killerton House near Exeter.

It was a beautiful day and we were greeted by Paul Fitzmaurice and our tutors for the day, Jenny Bennett and Peter Grainger, with a cup of coffee.

Approximately 10 students attended and once Paul had made the introductions, we went through the set timetable.

We started with Rock Hand Specimens and Jenny and Peter brought out a wide range of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock samples for everyone to examine before going through the key points relevant for the exam. We paired up with whoever was sitting next to us to help exchange ideas on the different rock samples and there was plenty of time for rock examination with both Jenny and Peter answering any questions which cropped up. Paul also made sure we were topped up with refreshments as we went along.

Next on the Agenda for the morning session was Thin Section Photomicrographs which Peter went through with us very methodically giving us plenty of tips and hints.

We stopped for a very relaxing lunch at about 12 noon and were able to sit outside as the weather was sunny and warm. Some students brought their own lunch whilst others purchased food at the Killerton House Café.

The afternoon session commenced with Fossils. Both Peter and Jenny brought a very good supply for us all to examine and again gave us plenty of hints and tips on the type of questions that may be asked.

Finally Maps - Peter went through this section again and the tips were very useful and clarified a lot of points and queries asked by all of us. Again we were given plenty of map samples to practice on ourselves.

Jenny and Peter supplied us with very good revision notes to accompany all the sections and were extremely approachable with all our questions. On a personal note, I was finding it extremely difficult to revise with so many sections and severe panic was setting in. The Revision Day really seemed to point me in the right direction and made my revision a great deal more methodical and also brought home to me my weak points. I know that whatever my result is for the exam, I would not have done as well without this very useful Revision Day and I would like to thank Paul Fitzmaurice, Jenny Bennett, Janet Adams and lastly my own tutor, Peter Grainger for a very helpful and informative day.
